Too long; didn’t read: read the stuff in blue and green.
My name is Jonathan Peterson. I started playing chess around the age of 8, playing against my dad. I was later introduced to Fritz (a chess engine) and played against it at different strengths. When I joined Chess.com at 14, I realized how differently people play compared to Fritz, and didn’t know how to improve. I’m now 23 and rated 2088 in Chess.com rapid, which, if you don’t know how ratings work, is advanced. I teach students ranging from complete beginners to advanced.

Many players struggle to understand why some moves are mistakes. In my lessons, I review your games to help you see clearly why certain moves are better than others.
There’s a lot more to chess than just mate-in-1s and hanging pieces. You’ll learn tactical motifs like attraction and clearance, and mating patterns such as Railroad Mate and Balestra Mate. I have a specific order for practicing these motifs.
Lots of people struggle in the opening. They’re told to control the center, but there are many different types of positions, which makes it harder for them to understand where to develop. I will help you understand this.
Basic mates like Queen and King vs. King are essential skills that we’ll work on. We’ll also cover more challenging mates like two Bishops and King vs. King.
Most people can’t keep up with chess YouTubers and streamers partly because they can’t identify squares quickly. (The other part is that they can’t see moves ahead quickly, which is something you simply have to practice.) I’ll teach you algebraic notation and help you identify squares faster, so you can follow them better.
